"But He Passed His Eye Test…" – Why Seeing Clearly Isn't the Same as Using Your Eyes Efficiently
"My child's eyesight is fine."
It is something we hear regularly at INPP.
A child is struggling to read. They lose their place on the page, complain that words move, avoid books, become tired during homework or have difficulty copying from the board. The obvious first step is an eye test—and the result comes back perfectly normal.
So why are they still struggling?
The answer lies in understanding the difference between seeing and using vision.
Good Eyesight Is Only the Beginning
A standard eye examination is designed to answer important questions:
Can you see clearly at different distances?
Do you need glasses?
Is the eye healthy?
Are there any signs of disease?
These are essential checks, and regular eye examinations should always be encouraged.
However, reading, writing and learning require much more than simply seeing clearly.
They depend on the brain and eyes working together as a highly coordinated team.
Vision Is a Skill
Think of vision like driving a car.
Having a car with a perfectly functioning engine doesn't automatically make someone a skilled driver. Driving safely requires steering, judging speed, coordinating movements, anticipating hazards and making constant adjustments.
The same is true for vision.
Your eyes may be healthy and able to see clearly, but they also need to:
Move smoothly across a line of text.
Work together as a team.
Focus quickly from near to far.
Maintain clear vision over long periods.
Judge depth and distance accurately.
Send stable, reliable information to the brain.
These are known as visual efficiency skills, and they develop throughout childhood alongside movement, balance and postural control.
When Development Doesn't Progress Smoothly
Visual skills do not develop in isolation.
During infancy and early childhood, they mature alongside the nervous system through movement and sensory experiences.
As babies learn to lift their heads, roll, crawl, creep, sit, stand and walk, they are also developing the neurological foundations needed for efficient visual control.
If aspects of early motor development are disrupted—or if primitive reflexes remain active beyond the first year of life—the brain may continue to prioritise balance and posture over efficient visual control.
This can make reading and close work much harder than they should be.
Children may experience:
Losing their place while reading
Skipping words or lines
Poor concentration during close work
Slow reading speed
Headaches or tired eyes
Difficulty copying from the board
Poor handwriting
Avoidance of reading altogether
Importantly, these difficulties can occur even when visual acuity is completely normal.

Looking Beyond "Perfect Eyesight"
If a child has passed an eye test but continues to struggle with reading, writing or concentrating on close work, it is worth remembering that eyesight is only one part of the picture.
Healthy eyes do not automatically guarantee efficient visual skills.
Understanding how vision develops—and recognising the role of movement, balance and neurological maturity—can help identify why some children continue to struggle despite having "perfect eyesight."
